Diamond Previews: Fantasy and Sword & Sorcery from July (shipping in November 2010)

Diamond Previews
Every month, comic book shops all over the world receive a preview book from their major distributor. This book is called Previews and lists all the comics that will begin shipping in 2 months. Previews ships as 2 different books. One is a main Previews book with all the comic book publishers, but Marvel. The other is the Marvel Previews book containing all the upcoming comics from Marvel Comics. We're taking time to highlight the high fantasy and sword and sorcery comics in the latest issue of Previews.

So that you can located them easily in this month's Previews books, we will note the comic books by the Previews book (Main or Marvel), page number, title and volume or issue number.

Marvel Previews

Page 7: Astonishing Thor #1 (of 8)
There's a Thor movie approaching, so expect to see lots of Thor merchandise coming from Marvel Comics. We only include Thor comics that feature more mythology than superheroics, so this fits the bill.
Page 14: Tales of the Dragon Guard - Into the Veil #3 (of 3) from Soleil
Page 65: Thor: For Asgard (#4 of 6)
Page 97: Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers HC
Page 97: Thor: Godstorm HC
This is a collection of a mini series wirtten by Kurt Busiek with art by Steve Rude. You can't go too wrong with Rude and Busiek,

Dark Horse
Dark Horse has most of the male Robert E. Howard licenses like Kull, Canan and Solomon Kane.
Page 22,23: Kull: The Hate Witch #1 (of 4)
If Dark Horse solicited this series with only the Tom Flemings cover, we would have passed on this series completely as that cover is just not very pleasing. Luckily, the interior artist (Gabriel Guzman) is a stronger artist.
Page 25: Conan: The Frazetta Cover Series #6
Page 43: Michael Moocock's Elric of Melnibone: Volume 1
This TPB collects the adaptations of the first 2 Elric stories (Elric of Melniborne and the Sailor on the Seas of Fate) with art by P Craig Russell.

IDW Publishing
Page 138: Dungeons and Dragons #1
The solicitation mentions Incentive module editions of this comic that allows you to role play the adventure from the comic book. That's a rather innovative way to get the D&D players to cross over and buy the comics.

Page Comics
Page 175: The Mice Templar Stechbook II
Page 177: Battle Chasers Anthology HC
The tome includes issues 0-9 of the Battlechasers series by Joe Maderiera, but it does not feature a finished story. You can probably find the single set of all 10 issues (0-9), so well less than $100

Page 214: FUBAR GN (Alterna Comics) HM
Just another old-fashioned WWII zombie anthology of 13 stories by an army of small press creators including Warmageddon's own Mike Imboden and Dominic Vivona. This anthology was aided and abbeded by Jorge Vega and Jeff McComsey.
Page 220: Cavewoman: Hunt #1 (Amryl)

Page 234: Wolfskin: Hundredth Dream #6 (Avatar)

Page 256: Warlord of Mars #2 (Dynamite)
Why J Scott Campbell drawing Deja Thoris with a navel? All Martians hatch from eggs and thus have no umbilical cords to form a navel.
Page 263: Red Sonja #55 (Dynamite)
The solicitation text reads as if, this is yet another drunken tavern brawl comic.
Page 264: Queen Sonja #14, Red Sonja: Deluge One Shot, Robert Jordan's the Wheel of Time : The Eye of the World #7 (Dynamite)
Page 267: Avatar of the Futurians #4 (of 4) (David Miller Studios)
We're almost certain this series isn't sword and sorcery, but the cover by Steve Conley and the solicitation text suggest that we will see a battle with Morgana La Fay

Warmageddon Creators Invade Baltimore and Upcoming Projects

Baltimore Comicon was this past weekend in Maryland and while Warmageddon did not have a booth, Warmageddon creators (both past, present, and future) were available. Writer, Mike "Fist of Justice" Imboden was present at the table next to artist, Ken "the Living Corpse" Haesar (Cease and Desist). On occasion, L Jamal Walton was present behind their tables causing trouble and otherwise being a menace. Two rows over, the FUBAR booth held East of Warmageddon artist, Dominic Vivona, and his High Noon cohort, Jeff McComsey. Jeff will be supplying the art on a future Mik'l story. Even upcoming Conan artist, Mike Hawthorne, who provided art for 2 Warmageddon Quarterly frontispieces was seen lurking about Baltimore after the con.

With so many Warmageddon creators in attendance, we hope that everyone was able to get every Warmageddon item that they craved. If not, they are always available 24 hours a day, 365.25 days a week at BullCityComics.com.

In a small schedule update, Life with Thomas, will be updating on the 15th of every month and not the 1st of the month. Here's a sneak peak of the strip that will appear on Wednesday, Sept 15, 2010.

In rebuilding the Warmageddon empire, Alexander Landa has provided Jamal with his original scan of his Eirian and Orumil art. Jamal took the liberties to fix most of the problems from his first attempt to ink and color this art as he revisits it. See is you can note the differences between this and the previous piece as Jamal works through the inks.

Dungeons and Dragons #0 Reviewed

Fell Four Five
writer: John Rogers
artist: Andrea Di Vito
colorist: Andrew Dalhouse

Freedom
writer: Alex Irvine
artist: Peter Berting
colorist: Ronda Pattison

letterer: Chris Mowry
editor: Denton J. Tipton
consulting editor: Andy Schmidt
IDW is a small publisher that has grown by leaps and bounds over the last couple years. This growth has been fed mainly through acquiring licenses to make comics of well known properties like Stark Trek, True Blood, GI Joe, Transformers, and Doctor Who. IDW has just landed another property, Dungeons and Dragons and to launch the title, they produced this zero issue for $1 and it shipped with 6 different covers. The cover to the right is COVER B by Wayne Reynolds. Other covers include on by Paul Renaud, Andrea Di Vito, and 3 more excluseive covers (Gencon, Hastings, and PAX 2010) by Wayne Reynolds.

This zero issue served as a preview for the ongoing series and the Dark Sun limited series as well as an announcement for the reprints of the previous D&D series and an upcoming Forgotten Realms comic. So there looks like there will be lots of D&D comic book material over the next couple years which is something that will have all sword and sorcery comic fans rejoicing as D&D comics have been non-existent ove the last 10 years.

Now that the D&D comics are returning to print, let's take a look at the 2 stories offered to us from IDW.
Fell's Four Five is a D&D dungeon crawl. You have a human, dwarf, halfing, and elf traipsing through a maze like cavern after a dragon. They stumble upon a group of slavers, so they must help as the paladins of the group can not leave those that need help behind. This, of course, leads then into yet another adventure as one of the slaves is not exactly what she appears to be. So you have the a quest within a quest which results in the party of 4 becoming a party of 5,

Fell's Five is a good set-up for the on-going comics. It sets up all. the characters as well as giving hints to their roles within the group as well as their D&D classes. Anyone familiar with D&D is likely to have played through a similar dragon crawl and that brings us to the problem with this story, it reads like a standard dungeon crawl which any of us can create in our very own D&D sessions. In order for a D&D comic to stand out, we think it has to bring something new and/or show something interesting. This story so far has done neither.

Freedom is set in the Dark Sun campaign setting and to be honest we are not familiar with Dark Sun at all. The story starts in the bed chambers of a merchant as she betrays her gladiator companion, Grudvik. Grudvik is sent to become a slave. Of course, he refuses to become a slave and escapes. Now he's is being hunted and swears revenge on his merchant lover, Rubi

This story has some parallels to the story that we are telling with Elrohir and Nyla, so we are interested in seeing where Irvine is taking the story. IUnfortunately, the story does not continue until Dark Sun #1 which has a planned ship date in January 2011. From the cover of issue #1, it looks like Grudvik will be joined by a female fighter and there may even be a pirate tale to be told

Supplementary material in this zero issue (and promised in other future issues) includes a stat card for the young black dragon that fought against Fell's Five. This serves a nice introduction to D&D for the comic fans and a nice supplement for D&D players that are reading and may want to introduce new elements into their gaming

Overall, this is a good beginning and we hope to see much more in the near future.
